about

Melbourne folk icons, The Maes, release their new single Make a Baby in time for Mother’s Day this Sunday. The song, penned by band vocalist and mandolin player Elsie Rigby, playfully, delightedly asks the question “Hey Baby, why don’t we make a baby?”. While not mothers themselves, Maggie and Elsie Rigby of The Maes wanted to celebrate the different shapes that motherhood can take with this song.

lyrics

Hey Baby, what if we make a baby
We could raise it up slowly
Why don’t we make a child

Hey Sweetheart, why don’t we make a baby
I hear it can tease your life apart
But it could be so worthwhile

And I can’t be sure but I think I want one one day
And it could be the time, it’s hard to say

Hey Darling, I think we could go steady
I can picture you next to me
Long time from here

Hey Pumpkin Face, how do you know when you’re ready
You can’t tell until suddenly
It’s obviously clear

And I think I want to love somebody forever
And I want you now but I can’t know how long for
Baby this is good love, this is all I need
This is high carbohydrate and slow release
This is open plan, this is boots on a hardwood floor

Hey Baby, what if we make a baby
One day eventually
Why don’t we make a child
